Primary Readiness Programs

Overview on Readiness for KG and Grade 1

Targheeb’s Primary Readiness Program is designed for children who require private coaching to obtain admission to Grade 1. Our role would be to ensure that we fill in the gaps or coach the child to meet the admission requirements for KG/Grade 1.

Please refer to the Prek Curriculum online. However, to meet local and national curriculum, we would also customize the lessons to the child’s requirements. The subjects will cover only English Literacy and Numeracy skills.

Areas covered and the learning outcomes would be as follows:

Kindergarten (4 – 5-year olds)

Listening
Student will be able to:
• respond to his/her name.
• understand two step directions and follow simple rules.
• demonstrate listening skills during circular time.
• retell stories and rhymes.
• actively communicate.

Speaking
Student will be able to:
• speak clearly and respond with complete sentences.
• express their emotions and needs.
• infer context and retell stories and rhymes.
• classify and sort e.g. big/small, color, shape etc.
• identify the initial, middle and last sounds of phoneme words.
• knows to encode CVC words.

Reading
Student will be able to:
• recognize English alphabet sounds.
• read CVC words.
• decode sounds with 1 syllable words and read levelled English reading books.

Writing
Student will be able to:
• draw, trace and color alphabets and images.
• write CVC letter words.
• encode and write their name.

Numeracy skills
Student will be able to:
• identify, count and write numbers 1-10.
• count numbers from 1-10 in the correct sequence.
• identify and name shapes and colors.
• understand the concept of more or less and smaller and bigger numbers.
• sort, match, and use patterns.
• add and subtract between 1 – 10.
• Understand size, length, width and capacity.
• Understand the use time and money.

Readiness program for Grade 1

Grade 1 (5 – 6-year olds)

Objectives:

Listening
Student will be able to:
• differentiate beginning, middle and last sounds in a word.
• understand directions and follow simple rules.
• demonstrate listening skills during circle time.
• retell stories and rhymes.
• actively communicate.

Speaking
Student will be able to:
• communicate confidently.
• expresses their feelings, voice their thoughts or opinions.
• retell incidents and stories.
• ask and respond to questions.

Reading
Student will be able to:
• identify vowels and consonants.
• recognizes the long and short vowel words.
• decode sounds with 1 – 2 syllable words.
• rhyme and read levelled English reading books.
• identify a verb, noun and adjectives.
• understand new vocabulary through frequently used words.

Writing
Student will be able to:
• draw, trace and color alphabets and images.
• write his/her own name.
• write 1 – 2 syllable words.
• write short and compete sentences using nouns, verbs and adjectives.
• use lowercase and uppercase letters in a sentence.
• Write the alphabetical order.

Numeracy skills
Student will be able to:
• identify, count and write numbers from 1-20 in the correct sequence/order.
• count and put the objects in to the right category of numbers of 1-20.
• figuring out greater and lesser numbers or larger and smaller numbers.
• ability to solve simple addition and subtraction operations, between 1 – 10..
•  identify and name shapes and colors.
• sort, match, and use patterns.
• Understand measuring units, measure things by size, length, width and capacity.
• Understand the use of time and money.
